Course Description

After completing this lesson, the student shall be able to describe major functions of first responders providing emergency medical care.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant must provide 

A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook opens in a new tab for approved forms of identification and guidelines. 

PPE must be NFPA-approved. See the Student Safety Manual to review PPE requirements for level 4.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Essentials of Fire Fighting, Seventh Edition recommended. 

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of the fire service in providing emergency medical care.
  • Explain patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Identify communicable diseases that first responders commonly encounter.
  • Explain ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases during emergency medical care.
  • Explain the process of patient assessment.
  • Describe Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Describe methods of controlling bleeding.
  • Explain shock management.
