Course Description

Are you ready to start a career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS)? The initial certification EMT-Basic program maybe your answer. Based on the National Standard Curriculum core competencies, this course meets or exceeds minimum hours and content established by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The course includes 160 hours of classroom lectures and hands-on skills, with 48 hours of hospital clinical and 72 hours of EMS internship.

Students successfully completing the didactic and clinical components of this program will be eligible to receive a course completion certificate and take the National Registry Cognitive Exam.

This course is also offered at night as EMS110.

Please note: Background checks are required for clinical and field rotations. Certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services or other certifying entity is independent of the TEEX EMS program and its training.

All classes are pending approval from the Texas Department of State Health Services.



Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer CPR card.

Course Completion Requirements

Requirements for CastleBranch clearance to begin clinical/field experiences

  • At least 17 years of age (must be 18 to become certified)
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • A negative tuberculosis (TB) test within six months of the class start date
  • Proof of two measles – mumps – rubella (MMR) vaccinations
  • TDAP (proof of vaccination within 10 years)
  • Be in the process of completing (or have completed) the hepatitis-B vaccination three-shot series
  • Varicella (chicken pox) proof of two vaccinations at any time or proof of disease
  • Current flu vaccination
  • Current criminal history background check covering the last seven years
  • Proof of health insurance coverage
  • Will be required to submit to a drug screening

Course Materials


You will be required to purchase the student textbook. This class will be using Prehospital Emergency Care Plus New MyBradyLab-11th edition, by Joseph Mistovich, available as a package from the publisher (ISBN: 9780134752327). You will need to enter the promo code provided by the EMS program for a discounted rate.

  • stethoscope
  • pocket mask with a one-way valve

These are available at most medical supply stores.

Classroom Uniforms

All EMS students attending a TEEX EMS program course at any level will be required to purchase and wear uniforms, which consist of:

  • a light blue Class B uniform shirt
  • navy blue uniform-style pants
  • closed-toe black polishable boots or shoes (non-tennis type)

You can also purchase as many T-shirts as you would like to be worn under the Class B uniform shirt; these can be worn during skills practice. These items can be purchased from Barker Productions online at www.barkerproductions.com or by visiting the gift shop in building 11 of the Brayton Fire Training Field.

Clinical Uniforms

Clinical shirts and ID’s will be provided to you and are part of your course fees.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education
process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class
sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a
minimum of 90% of the didactic hours as a component of successful course
completion. This means you are allowed to miss a maximum of 16 hours of
classroom time to still be eligible to continue to the next phase of training. During
the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements,
for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

  • Basic pharmacology
  • Trauma/Shock
  • Medical emergencies
  • Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)

Suggested Audience

  • Any individual wanting to pursue certification as an EMT-Basic


Continuing Education And Professional Credits

  • 120.00 hours – Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)
  • 6.00 hours – ACE

Other Information


The class meets three days a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m..

The 280 total hours are divided into:

  • 160 hours of lecture/skills lab
  • 48 hours of hospital clinical rotation
  • 72 hours of ambulance internship

The hospital and ambulance rotations begin during the classroom portion of the class. You will have up to two months after the last day of class to complete all class, clinical, and hospital requirements.


A slow-paced night EMS course is also available.


ACE information

The TEEX EMT-Basic programs have been approved for Semester Credit Hours through the American Council on Education (ACE). ACE recommends, in the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, six semester hours in Health Science, Allied Health, Emergency Medical Care or Fire Science.
