McAllen to host Infrastructure and Safety Summit – reduced-cost workforce training

McAllen, Texas, will be the center of an education extravaganza on March 24-28, when more than 400 people are expected to attend the Infrastructure and Safety Summit, a training event sponsored by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX).

The training summit features a broad spectrum of courses and provides a one-stop opportunity for workforce training, continuing education and professional development at significant savings. The 30 training courses are designed to assist both entry-level employees and experienced workers seeking career advancement in the fields of transportation, public works, utilities, and safety & health.

The summit will include reduced-cost training in water & wastewater, safety & health (OSHA), disaster management, environmental, energy efficiency, code enforcement, basic backhoe/loader operator, stormwater & hazardous waste, as well as work zone traffic control & flagging. Three courses will be conducted in Spanish: Flaggers in Work Zones, Basic Water Works Operations and 10-hour Construction Outreach.

Courses range from 4 hours to 31 hours in length, and will be conducted by subject-matter experts from TEEX’s Infrastructure Training & Safety Institute. Participants can save as much as $500 per course at this special training event, with reduced tuition fees ranging from $0 to $100 per class. For a $25 tuition fee, participants can earn the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Industry Outreach card, which can assist them in obtaining employment in the construction industry.

“We are pleased to announce that the city of McAllen is hosting this critical training for workers and employers in South Texas,” said Ron Peddy, Division Director of TEEX’s Infrastructure Training and Safety Institute. “We have been conducting regional training events across Texas for several years, but we expect this to be one of our largest yet. Feedback from our students and their employers tell us they like having multiple training opportunities available at a single location in their region, which saves them time and money.”

The daytime courses will be held at the McAllen Convention Center, and the evening classes will be held at the Embassy Suites in McAllen.
