Course Description

This course meets or exceeds the qualifications for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 470 Hazardous Materials / WMD Standard for Responders Chapter 18, ” Hazardous Materials Safety Officer – Competencies”, Chapter 19 ” Hazardous Materials Safety Officer – Professional Qualifications”

Upon completion of this course you are eligible to take the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications ( Pro Board) written exam and skills testing.

Prerequisites

Pro Board Certification Requirements

Participants pursuing Pro Board certification must provide proof of NFPA 470 Technician Competencies, Chapter 8, Or NFPA 1072 Professional Qualifications for Technician (2017 edition), or NFPA 472 Competencies for Hazmat Technician responder (2002, 2008, or 2014 editions) dated prior to the last day of class. The documentation must meet the certification office requirements

Attendance Requirements

Participants Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the  Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX Courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion and to sit for the Pro Board certification exam.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Analyze the incident by determining the magnitude of the event in terms of safety
  • Recognize exclusionary condition for the Hot Zone
  • Plan a response while identifying the safety precautions for potential tactics.
  • Review Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) selection, decontamination strategies, and medical procedures on site.
  • Prepare a Site safety and control plan
  • Deliver a Safety Briefing.
  • Monitor the safety of response personnel during the implementation phase of the incident, including communications, exposures, and physiological and psychological signs of stress.
  • Take corrective actions from deviations of safety protocols
  • Complete a safety report
  • Participate in the termination phase of the incident – Debriefing & Critique –

Suggested Audience

Personnel who respond to emergencies involving Hazardous Materials (HazMat)/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) for the purpose of analyzing the incident, selecting appropriate PPE, decontamination procedures, medical surveillance, and implementing tactics to operate within the Hazmat group while monitoring and preserving the safety of the responders and keeping the goal of mitigating the incident.

Course Attire / Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

For Classroom Activities, participants must wear full length pants, closed-toe shoes, and short sleeve / long sleeve shirts (no sleeveless shirts).
