Course Description

This is an online asynchronous course consisting of five modules, with an estimated length of three hours. This course will provide you with the opportunity to learn about how fires start, grow, and behave. You will be able to identify key components of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1010 standards. This course provides a structured overview of the fundamental principles that shape fire behavior.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.

In order to receive a certificate of completion, the participant must complete all modules. Participants have 180 days from the registration date to complete the course.

Online Course Technical Requirements

Participants must provide:

  • Desktop computer or laptop
    (Note: The use of a tablet is not recommended and may result in connectivity issues.)
  • Broadband or high-speed internet connection

    • Recommended: Wired connection with at least 2.0 Mbps bandwidth
      (bi-directional, i.e., sending and receiving)
    • Alternative: Wireless (Wi-Fi) connection
      (Note: The use of a MiFi or mobile hotspot is not recommended and may result in connectivity issues.)
  • Current version of web browser

    • Recommended: Mozilla Firefox 130 or higher, Google Chrome 130 or higher
    • Alternatives: Microsoft Edge 130 or higher, Safari 16 or higher [as applicable]

Attendance Requirements

To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the relationships among fire triangle and fire tetrahedron components, ignition and combustion conditions, and basic reaction types that influence combustion.
  • Explain how fuel characteristics interact with heat transfer mechanisms to influence fire ignition, growth, and spread.
  • Recognize fire behavior by identifying stages of development, control factors, and conditions leading to extreme events.
  • Describe key fire behavior indicators and associated hazards encountered during structural firefighting.

Suggested Audience

Law enforcement and non-commissioned personnel with assignments that may require them to provide courtroom testimony such as crime scene investigators, fire investigators, detectives, medicolegal death investigators, patrol officers, corrections officers and forensic nurses.
