Course Description

TEEX OSHA Training Institute Education Center LogoThe Safe Bolting: Principles and Practices (OSHA #7110) course covers awareness of safety issues involved in bolting applications. Course topics include safe operation and handling of high powered bolting tools, pressure vessels and piping, machinery or mechanical joints, and structural connections. The course provides workshops and demonstrations of safe bolting applications. The target audience is first line mechanical operators including millwrights, pipefitters, and those who work with mechanical joints as part of their daily work. Upon course completion, the student will have the ability to understand the basic technology of bolted joints, safety principles associated with tool selection and operation, workplace conditions, and bolting methods and procedures.

NOTE: Course topics vary by track.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

TEEX and the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) have an attendance policy that requires participants to fully attend an enrolled class in its entirety (100% of the course). We realize that extenuating circumstances may arise that would take a participant out of class and have a policy to handle those situations. If a participant misses less than 20% of the class, he/she may be able to perform makeup work equivalent to the class time missed. If 20% or more of the class is missed, the participant may attend a makeup course upon approval by TEEX’s OTI Education Center Director.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain how bolted joints are involved in and important to the success of all types of mechanical assemblies.
  • Discuss the concepts that underlie a functioning bolted joint.
  • Describe the role of the flange in bolted systems in pressurized vessels and pipes.
  • Describe the role of the bolted joint in structural connections.
  • Recognize the role of standard fasteners in a successfully bolted joint.
  • Recognize the role of structural fasteners in a successfully bolted joint.
  • Recognize the role of gaskets in contributing to a leak-free joint.
  • Explain how to achieve, measure, and control the assembly forces on a joint.
  • Explain the difference between tensioning and torquing a bolt.
  • Explain how to implement a sequential and gradual tightening plan to produce uniform load results on bolted joints of all types.
  • Explain the most common causes of bolt loosening and what to do about keeping joints tight.
  • Explain approved ways to tighten high-strength bolts in pre-tensioned and slip-critical joints.
  • Explain the importance of safety training for industrial bolting activities.
  • Show the process of safely connecting, adjusting, and operating powered industrial bolting tools.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for first-line mechanical operators and personnel who supervise their work.
