Course Description
As a firefighter, you will likely respond to an incident involving Hazardous Materials (HazMat). These materials have many beneficial uses, but can pose a considerable risk to the public, the environment, and to responders if they are uncontrolled and uncontained. HazMat/ WMD is an added threat that requires the modern fire service to ever evolve to maintain preparedness. This course covers hazard types, properties and behavior, and identification of hazardous materials. This course offers 4 CE hours covering hazard types, properties and behavior, and identification of hazardous materials. This course offers an interactive practice session and a module quiz based off IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting 7th edition. NFPA 1001 4.1, 4.2.1, 5.2.1, 5.3.1

Attendance Requirements
To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- 1. Explain the Analyze, Plan, Implement, and Evaluate (APIE) process at Hazardous Materials (HazMat) incidents.
- 2. Define a HazMat incident.
- 3. Recognize ways that hazardous materials harm people.
- 4. Identify states of matter as they relate to hazardous materials.
- 5. Explain physical properties that aid in identifying potential hazards and predicting behavior of hazardous materials.
- 6. Explain chemical properties that aid in identifying potential hazards and predicting behavior of hazardous materials.
- 7. Explain the role of the General Hazardous Materials Behavior Model (GEBMO) in predicting the behavior of containers.
- 8. Identify the seven clues that alert to the presence of hazardous materials.
- 9. Explain how pre-incident plans, occupancy types, and locations may indicate the presence of hazardous materials.
- 10. Recognize general container types and their associated behaviors and hazards.
- 11. Describe ways that transportation placards, labels, and markings indicate the presence and hazards of hazardous materials.
- 12. Define the hazard classes.
- 13. Identify other markings and colors that indicate the presence of hazardous materials.
- 14. Describe ways written resources are used to identify hazardous materials and their hazards.
