Course Description
The purpose of this course is to apply existing knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) as an Incident Safety Officer (ISO) and to support the safety of all personnel through a proactive and continual risk analysis that identifies and mitigates hazards to personnel at any incident scene, planned event or training exercise where there is an operational deployment.
Prerequisites
- ICS 100: An Introduction to the Incident Command System
- ICS 200: Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
Course Completion Requirements
Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.
Participants Must Provide
- a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
- You will need your FEMA SID number the first day of class.
To obtain a SID
1. Register at https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid
2. Select “Need a FEMA SID?” on the right side of the screen
3. Follow the instructions to create your account.
4. You will receive an email with your SID. Save this number in a secure location.
Attendance Requirements
To meet NFA attendance requirements, participants must
complete each training module and successfully complete all required course
assignments, activities, quizzes, and pass the end of course exam to receive
course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any
additional requirements.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Evaluate the comprehensive role of the Incident Safety Officer (ISO) across all types of hazard incidents and emergency responses.
- Formulate a risk management approach for various incidents and planned events.
- Analyze emergency scenarios for effective application of safety management principles.
- Analyze various operational environments for effective application of best practices for safety planning and interventions.
- Develop safety communications using radio protocols, briefings, interagency coordination and documentation to effectively convey safety information.
- Manage Incident Safety Officer (ISO) responsibilities while reinforcing critical decision- making and procedural documentation in complex incident environments.
- Implement strategies to enhance their effectiveness as an Incident Safety Officer (ISO) through performance improvement and professional development planning.
Suggested Audience
The target audience includes fire and emergency medical services (EMS) responders who may be designated by the Incident Commander (IC) as
an ISO while working within an ICS.

Note: Live Online Instructor-Led (webinar) courses are not eligible for TCOLE credit.
