This 10-day course is designed to prepare responders to function safely at the scene of a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) incident by understanding the potential hazards. This is accomplished by gaining recognition of chemical nomenclature and basic principles of chemistry in order to assess risks to responders and the public.
Problem-solving sessions and interactive discussion cover topics such as salts and inorganic nonsalts, hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon derivatives, and hydrocarbon radicals. Applying the science of chemistry to thermodynamics, volatility, and combustion provides real-world examples.
An understanding of basic chemistry is helpful to receive maximum benefit from the course.
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Course Completion Requirements

This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.
