COLLEGE STATION – More than 500 emergency responders in Santa Clara and the San Francisco Bay Area are better prepared for the upcoming Super Bowl 50 thanks to training provided by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX).

Approximately 70,000 people are expected to attend the NFL’s pinnacle event at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, on Feb. 7, where the Denver Broncos will face the Carolina Panthers. Up to 1 million people are also expected to visit the Super Bowl City public fan village and the NFL Experience in San Francisco.

Over the past year, more than 520 emergency personnel in the Bay Area have attended TEEX courses related to critical infrastructure protection, threat and risk assessment, sports and special events risk management, incident management, pediatric disaster response, medical preparedness and response for bombing incidents, and senior officials training.

“In coordination for the upcoming Super Bowl in California, TEEX’s National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center® (NERRTC), in cooperation with the other members of the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium® and with our partners at NCS4, has delivered numerous courses to assist Santa Clara and the Bay Area prepare for this national event,” said Jesse Watkins, Director of Operations for NERRTC.

“It is always rewarding to help our customers prepare for national level events, and we look forward to assisting other jurisdictions with similar events in the future.”

The specialized training was conducted through DHS/FEMA’s National Training and Education Division as part of the Homeland Security National Training Program. Some of the training represents a cooperative effort between The University of Southern Mississippi’s National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (USM/ NCS 4) and TEEX/ NERRTC.

TEEX is already discussing training needs with city officials and emergency managers in future Super Bowl locations, including Houston and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
