ISTC makes room for growth
Industrial Safety Training Council (ISTC) is growing, and that growth is met with excitement by the ISTC team as they work together to expand the company’s Nederland, Texas, Training Center in many new ways.
ISTC’s first expansion will create a new customer service, badge check-out center. It will be moved from its current location in the downstairs lobby area to upstairs across the hallway from the computer-based training (CBT) lab. The move will ensure a smoother, more efficient traffic flow.
Currently, the bottom floor of the Nederland Training Center serves as the check-in and check-out, with three stations for checking in, one for checking out and one for accepting payments. Moving the check-out and payment areas to the new upstairs location will also improve the efficiency of the check-in area since those two spaces will then be converted to additional check-in points.
“Having five check-in stations will help tremendously during the turnaround season, providing a speedy check-in time for our clientele,” Patty Collins, vice president of operations for the Nederland location, said.
The downstairs lobby area will see yet another renovation when an additional computer lab and classroom are built. The final upgrade will convert an existing upstairs classroom, just around the corner from the CBT lab, to an additional computer lab with 60 computers.
“There is a lot of excitement happening at the Nederland Training Center, and we are all looking forward to the new changes and expansions,” Collins said.
ISTC offers extensive training at both its corporate location in Nederland and at its Baytown, Texas, Training Center. ISTC is a nonprofit training and educational organization, delivering petrochemical and refining site specific and safety, health and environmental training to contractors and industrial employees.
ISTC/BEST Complex partners with TEEX on Cooperative Learning Center
ISTC’s Beaumont Emergency Services Training (BEST) Complex and the Texas Engineering Extension Service’s (TEEX) Emergency Services Training Institute have partnered to allow ISTC/BEST to teach several recognized National Professional Qualification Standard, or Pro Board, courses that are available through TEEX accreditation.
The agreement will allow both training entities to deliver courses at a regional level. Targeted courses are those delivered by TEEX in “Industrial Firefighting Hazardous Response and Rescue.” ISTC’s BEST Complex offers professionally trained instructors, realistic evolutions and opportunities for different modes of course delivery.
To ensure quality and accreditation, TEEX will oversee the Pro Board courses offered at the BEST Complex.
World renowned for its hands-on training, the Texas Engineering Extension Service offers a wide range of technical, skills training programs. In 2006, TEEX provided training and technical assistance to more than 221,500 people from all 50 states, five U.S. territories, the District of Columbia and 57 countries through 6,000 classes conducted across the nation and world.

Industrial Security Officer Training’
ISTC is pleased to offer its “Industrial Security Officer Training” (ISOT) course. ISTC, in conjunction with Moxie Media and Seasecure, is excited to offer this basic security offer training, including International Ship and Port Facility Security code and U.S. Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 certification training. ISOT will provide basic security officer training and prepare the graduate to effectively discharge the duties of a company security officer, port facility security officer and ship security officer, as well as provide important “domain knowledge” to Port State Control officers, recognized security organization auditors and other maritime security professionals.

Excavation & Trenching Competent Person’
ISTC’s “Excavation & Trenching Competent Person” course focuses on OSHA standards and the safety aspects of excavation and trenching. Topics include types of shoring, the aforementioned OSHA standards on excavation and trenching, soil mechanics, and testing methods.
This is an eight-hour course. The cost of the course is $150 per student for four to 19 students and $140 per students for 20 or more students.
Fall Protection Competent Person’
ISTC’s “Fall Protection Competent Person” course provides an overview of requirements under 29CFR1926 subpart M, which covers fall protection. This course is for workers and competent person certification.
This is an eight-hour course. The cost of the course is $150 per student for four to 19 students and $140 per students for 20 or more students.
