As BP continues its efforts to stop the flow of oil from the April 20 Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico, the company has called on TEEX to provide basic safety training curriculum for workers, contractors, and volunteers who will be involved in cleaning up the shoreline.

A new grant from FEMA will allow TEEX to offer mobile training in emergency vehicle operations to hundreds of Texas firefighters each year. The $284,575 FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety grant will allow TEEX’s Emergency Services Training Institute (ESTI) to purchase a mobile emergency vehicle driving simulator to provide driver safety training across the state.
Emergency personnel responded to a mock explosion of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) in the New Jersey Marine Terminals during a training exercise only hours after a similar car bomb was discovered across the river in New York City’s Times Square. The Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Urban Search and Rescue division has created a Swiftwater Calculator application for water rescue technicians. In three easy steps, responders can use the application to calculate the speed of the current and then determine the maximum distance a person in the water has traveled downstream.

Pat Barrett, champion of the Texas fire service and advocate of firefighter safety and education, died Saturday (April 3) at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston after collapsing at an event in League City on Wednesday. Barrett, 57, was Associate Director of the Emergency Services Training Institute.
TEEX has received the statewide Pro Patria Award from the Texas Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. Only six employers were selected for the prestigious award out of 900 nominated by their employees serving in the Reserves.
