Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) swiftwater and helicopter rescue teams were demobilized this morning (July 12) by the Texas Division of Emergency Management after a four-day deployment to South Texas for widespread flooding along the Rio Grande. The Texas Public Works Response Team still has members assisting local officials with restoring public utilities and flood recovery efforts.
Hundreds of Spanish-speaking firefighters from across the globe are expected to make the trip to College Station for the 44th annual Spanish Fire Training School (Escuela para Bomberos en Español), which begins July 11.

As the remnants of Hurricane Alex weaken and move inland over northeastern Mexico, the Texas Division of Emergency Management has demobilized the Texas Task Force 1 – Type I search and rescue team and the Texas Task Force 2 (Dallas) – Type III team. The TX-TF1 Type III team and 9 swift water rescue teams will remain in the Rio Grande Valley until at least Saturday to assist local jurisdictions if needed due to possible flooding. The Rapid Response Task Force Austin and the Public Works Response Team have also demobilized.
With Tropical Storm Alex presenting an increasing potential threat to South Texas, the Governor of Texas has authorized Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) to activate and plan for deployment ahead of the storm.

TEEX’s Emergency Operations Training Center in College Station was transformed last month into Newark Liberty International Airport, where two simulated explosions killed or injured passengers and crippled airport operations. The 50-plus participants from The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the airport, airlines, and several New Jersey police, fire and EMS agencies responded as if it were a real incident.
Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) has deployed seven swiftwater rescue teams throughout Central Texas at the direction of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, to assist local responders following severe weather that dropped as much as 12 inches of rainfall on New Braunfels in several hours. TX-TF1 has also staged helicopter rescue technicians with two Texas Military Forces UH-60 helicopters, which are equipped with a special hoist and carry water rescue equipment.
The state of Texas has been working with TEEX to prepare for an active 2010 hurricane season that forecasters say could spawn 8-14 hurricanes. A series of planning meetings, tabletop exercises and rehearsal of concept (ROC) drills culminated in two full-scale functional exercises in the Houston-Galveston and Lake Sabine hurricane areas and the regions that shelter their evacuees – completed before June 1, the official beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season.
