Course Description
AWR136 is an eight-hour, non-technical introduction to cybersecurity designed to empower individuals and organizations with the awareness and practical skills needed to combat today’s cyber threats. Whether at work or at home, participants will learn how everyday actions can strengthen cybersecurity and prevent disruptions to business, government, and emergency response operations.
This course goes beyond theorydelivering hands-on techniques that provide immediate personal value and foster a lasting culture of cyber hygiene and resilience across your organization.
What You’ll Learn:
- The seven layers of cybersecurityand how to secure the most vulnerable layer: people
- How to identify and protect Internet of Things (IoT) devices in homes and workplaces
- How to shrink your digital footprint using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) tools
- Today’s evolving threat landscape, including six ransomware attack vectors and emerging tactics like SEO poisoning, drive-by downloads, malvertising, and impersonation
- How cyber attackers are leveraging AIand how to defend against it
- A practical Cyber Hygiene toolkit with hands-on exercises covering:
- Building a “human firewall”
- Safe browsing, password management, multi-factor authentication and passkeys
- Using online tools to find out if your accounts have been exposed in a data breach.
- Securing social media, mobile devices, home routers, and IoT devices
- Removing personal data from the public Internet

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Enrollment Requirements
Participants must be U.S. citizens. A FEMA Student ID is required to register for and participate in any training provided by FEMA agencies. All FEMA training providers, registration systems, and enrollment procedures are required to use this FEMA SID, which can be obtained at the following website: https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid; or with TEEX assistance upon arrival for class.
Course Completion Requirements
Participants are required to score a 70% or better on the Post-Test and attend 80% of the course hours in order to receive a course certificate of completion.
Participant Must Provide
- A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.
- Laptop or tablet
Attendance Requirements
Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Analyze the importance of the human layer in defense against cyber attacks.
- Assess how cybersecurity threats can impact individuals and their organizations.
- Implement cyber hygiene practices to improve cybersecurity.

State, local, tribal, and territorial personnel with no more than a basic understanding of cybersecurity who use computers and other internet-connected devices in public or private organizations. This includes representatives from:
