Course Description

NFA logoTo apply a leadership philosophy to the Training Function in small departments.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide 

A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook opens in a new tab for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines. 

You will need your FEMA SID 3 on the first day of the course. 

To obtain a SID: 

1. Register at https://cdp.dhs.gov/femasid.

2. Select “Need a FEMA SID?” on the right side of the screen.

3. Follow the instructions to create your account. 

4. You will receive an email with your SID. Save this number in a secure location. 

Attendance Requirements

To meet NFA attendance requirements, participants must complete each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end-of-course exam to receive course completion. Exceptions may be discussed with the lead instructor. During the course, your instructor will review any additional requirements. 

ICS 100, 200, and Incident Command System (ICS)-100-level and ICS-200-level training. Preferred courses are available through NFA Online.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Identify issues that affect their ability to provide adequate training.
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of the fire department Training Officer.
  • Describe and differentiate characteristics of leaders.
  • Analyze the change process.

  • Fire and rescue personnel who coordinate training in small departments. 
  • Volunteer firefighters and officers who instruct in small fire and rescue departments. 
  • Fire personnel serving on training committees. 
  • Training officers in volunteer fire departments.
