Course Description

This 24-hour course provides you with interesting and challenging response scenarios beyond basic response skills for responding to oil spills in estuarine and coastal environments. Classroom time accounts for approximately six hours of training time. The remainder is hands-on field time with emphasis on booming strategy and tactics.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Course Attire/Personal Protective Equipment  

  • For classroom activities, participants must wear full length pants, closed-toe shoes, and short sleeve / long sleeve shirts (no sleeveless shirts).
  • For field exercises, TEEX will provide hard-hats, cloth working gloves, life jackets, and disposable ear protection. 
  • Participants should bring foul weather gear if inclement weather is a possibility. 

Participants Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

Due to the strenuous nature of class activities, you should secure a professional evaluation of your physical condition prior to enrolling in this course.

Recommended Prior Knowledge 

The completion of the Oil Spill Control course or a similar type of course

  • Large Scale Simulated Release Exercise
  • Mobile Skimming Operations
  • Multiple boom deployment operations to include: Cascade booming operation, Vessel/Rig enclosure containment operation, Mobil booming operation
  • Skimmer and Crude Oil Exercise
  • Sorbents and chemical agents
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) Communications Exercise
  • Decontamination, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardos Waste Operations
  • Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Issues
  • Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) and Shoreline Assessment Issues
