Course Description
This online course prepares participants to establish and secure scene boundaries, utilize proper search methods, and scene documentation. Participants will learn case documentation techniques, such as note taking, videography, photography, sketches, and reports while tying together all information into practical activities.
This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for Texas Forensic Science Academy Scene Basics course #2210.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Course Completion Requirements
Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.
- The mandatory completion period for this eCourse is 45 days from your registration date.
- Participants have three attempts to pass the final examination.
- To complete this course, you must have access to a computer with internet access.

Attendance Requirements
To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Discuss the basics of crime scene security and how to establish crime scene perimeters.
- Identify different methods of searching a crime scene.
- Discuss the role of notes in crime scene documentation.
- Discuss how to use videography in crime scene documentation.
- Determine how to correctly write a report.

- Law enforcement and non-commissioned personnel assigned to investigative tasks and duties such as crime scene investigators, fire investigators, detectives, medicolegal death investigators, patrol officers and corrections officers
