Course Description

TEEX OSHA Training Institute Education Center LogoOSH747 Managing Excavation/Trenching Operations covers the requirements to manage excavation/trenching operations. The course will include an understanding of the OSHA excavation requirements, excavations/trenching hazards, and control measures. Additional participants will learn about soil analysis techniques and protective system requirements. At the conclusion of this course, the participant will understand how to manage trenching/excavation operations.

NOTE: This course is taught in English.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

In order to receive a Certificate of Completion, the participant must:

  • Attend 100% of the course
  • Sign the attendance roster each day of class
  • Complete and pass the final exam(s)/field activities/etc.
  • Complete the end-of-course evaluation

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process, and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirement, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

It is recommended participants have a basic understanding of excavation construction activities.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Describe excavation/trenching requirements.
  • Describe worker protection requirements.
  • Recognize soil testing methods.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for the private sector construction employer, manager, employee, or employee representative who, as part of a safety and health program, would be acting as and fulfilling the requirements of a competent person for excavation work as described in the OSHA construction safety standard for excavations (29 CFR1926 Subpart P).

Other Information

Participants who are pre-registered for the course need to verify their information on the Participant Verification Form. Participants who were not pre-registered for the course will need to complete the Participant Registration Form. However, registering online at https://teex.org/ is strongly recommended. Only legal names supported by a verified photo identification document may be used.

Participants attending face-to-face classroom training events will be required to provide photo identification. Participant identification will be verified by a TEEX designated representative the morning of the first day of class. The proof of identification should include the full name and photograph of the individual. The following are acceptable forms of photo identification:

  • State-issued IDs such as a Driver’s License or Identification Card
  • United States of Foreign Passports
  • National Identity Card
  • U.S. Military Card (front and back)
  • Military Dependent’s ID Card (front and back)
  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Employment Authorization Document
  • Employee ID or Badge with photo
