Course Description

This is the lesson covering fire dynamics. This lesson describes the science of fire. It includes information about thermal energy, fuel, and oxygen, as well as self-sustained chemical reactions. The lesson also covers fire development in a compartment, structure fire development, and the reaction of building construction to fire.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide 

A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook opens in a new tab for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines. 

PPE must be NFPA-approved. See the Student Safety Manual to review PPE requirements for level. 

Attendance Requirements

This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. The participants must complete each training module and successfully complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or pass the end of course exam to receive course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional requirements. 

Essentials of Fire Fighting, Seventh Edition recommened.  

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles of fire science.
  • Describe the construction and operation methods of different types of doors and windows.
  • Explain the function of fuel within the combustion process.
  • Explain the function of oxygen within the combustion process.
  • Explain the self-sustained chemical reaction involved in flaming combustion.
  • Differentiate among the stages of fire development.
  • Explain how fire fighting operations can influence fire behavior in a structure.
  • Describe how building construction and layout affects fire development.
