Texas Meter School draws 218 participants, 61 vendors

The 2013 Southwest Electrical Metering Association (SWEMA) Texas Meter School attracted 218 participants to the Texas A&M Riverside Campus for hands-on training, networking and the latest updates in metering technology. Attendees also had the chance to see new products and equipment during a vendor show that drew an additional 61 exhibitors.

School participants included representatives from municipalities, electric cooperatives, investor-owned utilities and governmental/regulatory organizations. Five, 32-hour electrical metering classes covered single-phase and poly-phase electrical metering technology, as well as advanced topics in high-voltage National Generation/Transmission Metering. This year, an additional math and scientific calculator tutorial session was offered at no cost. The classes were conducted Oct. 28 – Nov. 1 by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) along with volunteer instructors from SWEMA member electric power utilities and vendors.

“The 2013 Annual SWEMA Texas Meter School was a great success with 218 students in attendance,” said TEEX Program Director Bill Stansbury. “We also introduced a pre-class calculator/math tutorial that was a big success as well. We hope to supplant that in the future with our new online Math Basics for Electric Power Metering offering that will be available in the near future.”

The Texas Meter School is the only school of its type in Texas and has been held for more than 60 years.

The next SWEMA Meter School is scheduled for Oct. 27-31, 2014.
