Texas firefighters to benefit from new TCFP reciprocity policy

COLLEGE STATION – A new reciprocity policy approved by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) will provide TCFP certification for select Pro Board certifications issued by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX).

The historic decision was made by the TCFP Board of Commissioners at its January 2014 meeting. The Commissioners unanimously approved a reciprocity policy that allows some TEEX Pro Board certifications to be submitted to the state certification system to receive TCFP certification.

“This was three years in the making and involved an extensive review process by staff members from the TCFP,” said TEEX Program Director Brandi Plunkett. “The new reciprocity policy represents a strong collaborative relationship between TEEX and TCFP that will benefit Texas firefighters for years to come.”

Under the new policy, Texas firefighters who successfully pass the national Pro Board certification exam given by TEEX will be able to submit their Pro Board certification to the TCFP for state certification. They will not have to pay the additional TCFP testing fee, although they will still be required to pay the state certification fee. The new policy does not affect the current procedure for IFSAC certification through the TCFP.
