Fire Recruit Detailed Student Information

Requirements

Registration

Recruit Academy students must meet the following requirements prior to attending any portion of the program 

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must submit a copy of your high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle driver’s license, with no pending actions of suspension or revocation and provide a copy on day one of the Academy.
  • Must submit a Doctor Physical Record dated no more than 30 days prior to the start date of the Academy and Proof of Meningitis Vaccination within the last five years.  Students 22 years of age or older at the time of the class start date are exempt from the Meningitis requirement.
  • ​International students must submit a color copy of their Passport along with a signed and notarized affidavit of responsibility.

Technical (for Online Students Only)

In order to successfully complete this course, you should have access to computer equipment meeting the following system requirements:

  • Recommended screen resolution: 1280 x 1024
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1024 x 768
  • Broadband or high speed internet
  • Latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari web browsers
  • Latest version of Flash
  • Latest version of Adobe Reader

Protective Clothing

While performing field exercises, students must wear full protective clothing. Students may bring their own clothing or departmental issue. All protective clothing worn during field exercises must meet NFPA standards and pass an inspection by the Academy staff. Protective clothing may also be rented by those students wishing to do so.   • This course requires PPE Level 4 as described in theTEEX Student Safety Manual. All students are required to follow this manual at all times.
  • The PPE ensemble shall include the following elements:
    • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)-approved structural firefighting helmet with face shield
    • NFPA-approved firefighting hood
    • NFPA-approved structural firefighting boots
    • NFPA-approved firefighting gloves
    • NFPA-approved structural firefighting bunker coat
    • NFPA-approved structural firefighting bunker pants.
  • Due to our accreditation with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP), all municipal fire recruit academy students at TEEX must wear a personal protective equipment ensemble that is compliant with:
    • 2007 Edition of  NFPA 1971 Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting
    • 2008 Edition of NFPA 1851 Standard on Selection, Care, and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural and Proximity Fire Fighting

Class Uniforms

Students need to bring sufficient quantities of uniform clothing for the duration of the Academy and to allow several changes for field exercises.

All uniform essentials(excluding Bunker gear) must be purchased at Barker Productions which is located at Brayton Fire Field in building 11.The class uniform consists of the following

  • Navy blue Academy t-shirt
  • Navy blue pants/trousers (no blue jeans)
  • Black belt with a plain belt buckle
  • Black shoes or boots, preferably a polishable leather type
  • Light blue uniform shirts (short and long sleeve)

Reporting Instructions

Enrolled cadets will receive updated information about the academy electronically. Reporting instructions and all necessary information will go out at least 45 to 60 days prior to the start date of the academy. 

Please make sure your registration information is correct and that you check your email account regularly. The PPE inspection requirements and other important data are relayed via email as well.
