Hico, Texas, is a small community with big dreams. It is embarking on an initiative aimed at expanding the local economy through tourism, small business development and associated services. The Hico Economic Development Corp. has called on TEEX to assist in creating the communityÂ’s first Economic Development Strategic Plan.
The first group of Aggies majoring in the Forensic and Investigative Sciences degree program at Texas A&M University recently earned an important credential to add to their resume: the TEEX Forensic Technician Certificate. The students earned the certificate by completing 80 hours of forensics training through the Texas Forensic Science Academy.
TEEX’s grant-funded course, MGT 313 – Incident Management/Unified Command,
has been recertified as a blended learning course offered through the DHS/FEMA Homeland Security National Training Program.
TEEX’s Brayton Fire Training Field in College Station, TX, one of the largest emergency services training complexes in the U.S., has more than doubled in size to 279 acres, following a property transfer from Texas A&M University.
When the TEEX Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Tech I Class #47 graduated in May, they earned a unique distinction. They became the first class of Unexploded Ordnance Technicians to go digital – instead of lugging around two 3-ring binders, the students were issued iPads loaded with all of their study materials.
Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) specialty rescue teams have been demobilized by the State of Missouri. The team was comprised of 8 members and 3 canines. During their deployment in Joplin, Mo., the team participated in 13 search missions, and searched several miles and significant areas of interest such as apartment buildings, nursing homes and residential areas.
Gov. Rick Perry has authorized the deployment of specialized search and rescue resources from Texas Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) to deploy to Joplin, MO. The personnel and canines will assist local responders in the continuing search for victims of Sunday’s devastating tornado.
Fifteen agencies recently participated in a realistic, full-scale exercise (FSE)at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s Bus Terminal in Manhattan. The realistic FSE focused on practicing interagency response protocols developed through many months of planning meetings and exercises conducted by the Port Authority with assistance from TEEX.
TEEX recently hosted the quarterly conference of the Texas Lyceum in College Station. Seventy Lyceum Directors and alumni from across the state spent two days examining how Texas prepares emergency personnel and officials to act quickly and effectively to save lives and restore critical infrastructure during a disaster.
The three-story warehouse and apartment complex burn project at Brayton Fire Training Field will be torn down to make way for a modern interior firefighting training complex. While the new complex is under construction, an interim interior firefighting burn prop has been completed and tested, and is now ready for the 2011 Fire Schools.
