Course Description

SFST Officer conducting test on driverHaving proper skills to conduct a sobriety test is essential to successful DWI/DUI traffic enforcement. This update course is designed for existing Standard Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Practitioners to receive a review of the latest updates in the SFST program. The primary purpose is to improve the overall consistency of administration of the SFSTs by individual police officers.

Officers can refresh their skills with:

  • recognizing and interpreting evidence of DWI
  • administering and interpreting the scientifically validated sobriety tests
  • describing DWI evidence clearly and convincingly
  • reviewing information regarding recent case law and research studies

This course course is offered under the Keeping Texas Prepared – LAW Extension course suite and meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements for S.F.S.T. Practitioner Update Course #2178.

Prerequisites

Participants enrolling in this course must complete the following courses prior to attendance:

  • Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Practitioner

If you are claiming a course equivalent from another training provider, you must upload the certificate of successful completion and TCOLE training record to your MyTEEX Student Portal within 48 hours of registration. If you completed the course requirement with TEEX, a TEEX employee will verify that you completed the course and received a passing grade.

Enrollment Requirements

Participants enrolling in this course must meet the following employment status:

  • Currently commissioned as a peace officer with SFST instructor experience

Please upload a copy of your prerequisite and enrollment requirements within 48 hours of registration to your MyTEEX Student Portal. The preferred document naming convention is “Last Name, First Name – Document.”

Participants will be contacted via email to confirm approval and admittance into the course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participants must provide information for all required fields, including their U.S. citizenship/permanent resident information, in addition to meeting all other attendance and course completion requirements. If this information is not provided, the participant will be considered incomplete and will not receive a certificate of completion.

  • A proficiency exam will be given to all participants the first day of class.
  • All participants are required to pass the proficiency exam to continue the course.

Participant Must Provide

  • A photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process, and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. The course requires participants to attend a minimum of 100% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirement, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed.

This course will have varying daily start and end times throughout the course offering. In some cases, make-up work will not be available (due to equipment/facility needs and/or safety/teamwork components or activity setup/facilitation/requirements).

Participants in a TCOLE credit eligible course must complete the class in its entirety to receive a TEEX Certificate of Completion and be reported for TCOLE credit.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Identify typical cues of Detection Phase One and Phase Two.
  • Describe observed cues clearly and convincingly.
  • Describe significance of the impaired motorcycle rider’s problem.
  • Outline skills necessary to detect, arrest, and prosecute alcohol- and drug-impaired motorcyclists
  • Outline results of selected SFST validation studies.
  • Describe properly administered SFSTs
  • Define nystagmus and the difference between types
  • Articulate indicators and clues of the three SFSTs.
  • Identify limitations of the three SFSTs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to properly administer the three SFSTs.
  • Conduct a complete test of HGN and VGN.
  • Administer the verbal instructions and physical demonstrations of the WAT and OLS tests.
