TEEX and Tarleton State sign Cooperative Agreement for college credit
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Tarleton State University and the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) have signed an agreement whereby credits earned in TEEX training classes can be applied toward Tarleton degrees.
TEEX, also a member of The Texas A&M University System, is one of the largest workforce training providers in the country. It provides courses and training in areas such as emergency response and preparedness, public safety and security, fire safety, public works and infrastructure, urban search and rescue and more.
Under the terms of the agreement, TEEX technical courses can be applied toward Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, and Bachelor of Science Applied Science degrees at Tarleton.
Dr. George Mollick, associate professor and head of the Department of Engineering Technology, served as Tarleton’s representative during discussions with TEEX on the cooperative agreement.
“It provides a clear pathway for (TEEX students) to complete their baccalaureate degree in a timely manner and at much less cost,” Mollick said. “Although many TEEX students have professional certification and training, a significant number of these professionals eventually discover the importance of having a college degree in order to seek promotion or other higher salaried position within their industry. Through this agreement, these working professionals will now have the ability to pursue a degree and achieve their career goals as well.”
Such students, Mollick said, are typically older, have families and stable jobs. “The barriers for those people to go back to school are horrendous,” he said. “If you can provide students who are time-bound or place-bound the opportunity to pursue their education, that is a huge benefit.”
Mollick said Tarleton’s expanding online degree offerings would allow TEEX students, regardless of where they reside, to complete a degree without leaving their jobs or communities.
TEEX CEO Gary Sera said the agreement “begins an exciting new chapter for TEEX. Partnering with a quality education provider such as Tarleton State will allow us to provide students with an academic opportunity we have not been able to offer in the past.”
