Chances are that most high school projects are undertaken by students hoping for a good grade or blue ribbon. For four students at Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas, their hopes are a little higher. Jordy King, Tanner Underwood, Jared Pentecost, and Skyeler Washburn are taking on “Dead Man’s Curve” and with a little help, are proposing improvements to local law enforcement, fire departments and the Texas Department of Transportation.
“Dead Man’s Curve” is a name given to dangerous roads in many communities. This instance refers to a particularly bad curve along a treacherous 10 mile section of US Highway 277, South of Abilene, Texas. Aside from trying to help make the road itself safer, the students also hope to help emergency responders with incident management and traffic control plans to reduce the chance of secondary crashes after an accident.
The project is part of the “”Family, Career and Community Leaders of America” competition. The students have received assistance not only from their advisor, Martha Watson, but also from the Texas Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), which is part of the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX).
Media are invited to attend as the students discuss their proposal with first responders and the public.
