Canine Search RES502 Volunteer Program – Canine
Since 2006, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) and Disaster City have utilized an incredible group of volunteers from the surrounding communities to assist with Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) training and large-scale exercises. The very difficult task of training for a large-scale disaster or terrorist attack requires that emergency responders be exposed to the chaos and disorganization of a disaster scene. Our volunteers help create that chaos and realism. They make training and exercises in Disaster City? the most realistic in the world.
Remember, emergency responders are depending on you in order to conduct training. The most important thing about the volunteer program is to have fun. Volunteers will learn about emergency response and how search and rescue operations are conducted.
Training and exercises happen in Disaster City? year round. Announcements are sent as the opportunities arise.
Make sure you have signed up before you show up in Disaster City to volunteer. All volunteers will receive a confirmation email indicating that they are signed up for a particular shift. Swift Water Rescue TNG80A Swiftwater Awareness On-Line Training
The Swiftwater Awareness Online course provides participants with the knowledge to keep themselves and others safe when they encounter a water incident, including moving water.
The course is appropriate for any emergency responder (Fire Service, Law Enforcement, EMS, Public Works, and National Guard) that could find themselves within 10 feet of the water’s edge during a swiftwater or flood incident.  Swiftwater is defined by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as water moving at a rate that exceeds one knot or approximately 1.15 miles per hour (mph). By comparison, the average walking pace is 3.3 mph.
This course reviews proper safety at a swiftwater incident and how responders can safely stay away from the hazards that such incidents pose to citizens and emergency responders.  Participants will learn the importance of scene safety and management, and general hazards.  This online course teaches all the knowledge and skills required to perform at the Awareness level according to NFPA 1670.
Awareness level courses are designed for responders who require the skills necessary to recognize and support a swiftwater incident but this course does not provide any training to conduct or manage a swiftwater rescue incident.  This online awareness course provides an overview of specific rescue situations and precautions that responders should utilize on scene of a swiftwater incident.
Wide Area Search PER213 Wide Area Search
When disaster strikes, it can be a challenge to effectively mobilize, organize, and deploy resources needed to perform wide area searches. This course is an excellent training opportunity for any jurisdiction or agency that may face such an emergency. The course content applies to a vast number of critical situations, including natural disasters or terrorist incidents.
You will be instructed in practical search methods and skills so you can perform systematic searches over a large affected area. The training will include challenging exercises that mirror real life scenarios. The three-day long event will conclude with an in-depth exercise that requires participants to utilize the skills gained during the course by working through an incident from start to finish in a single operational period.
The trainers delivering the course are knowledgeable—they are experienced emergency responders who have actively utilized wide area search techniques during some of the nation’s largest and most challenging operations, such as Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, Gustav, and Rita; the Space Shuttle Columbia recovery operation; and many other incidents that required the same comprehensive strategies.
