At a hazardous materials incident, over protection can be just as, if not more, dangerous than under protection. Knowing the different respiratory protection and protective ensembles gives the responder the knowledge to predict ensemble limitations as well as user limitations. Once the determination of PPE has been made the responder can effectively mitigate the emergency using spill and leak control measures learned at the Operations level. Once the incident has been mitigated a decontamination process reduces the chances of secondary contamination. The Operations level responder must also be able to differentiate, set up, and work in different types of decontamination corridors.
